“Sleeping Lady”

The legend of “Sleeping Lady” as told by the native elders of the area, tells of a maiden who falls asleep awaiting the return of her warrior lover who has gone away to war.  Sadly, the warrior perishes in battle, leaving the lady to slumber eternally. This painting of Mt. Susitna, offers a unique perspective. The location chosen by James  places you closer to the mountain, where the waters of Cook Inlet normally are. The mouth of the stream is depicts the artist’s memories of fishing for silvers on the flats at the mouth of “Cottonwood Creek”, located in the Matanuska Valley, Alaska.
