“THE ALASKA COLLECTION”  - HMS Resolution 1778

In 1776 set sail on his third voyage of exploration. Aboard the HMS Resolution, accompanied by HMS Discovery, Cook would attempt to find the fabled Northwest Passage. In the spring of 1778, amid stormy weather off the coast of Alaska, Cook spotted a large opening leading to the northeast. Against the advise of the 23 -year -old  sailing master William Bligh, he sailed up what he thought was a river that could lead to the northern seas. It lead instead to a huge inlet, which Cook explored for two weeks before deciding there was no opening east. Cook named the “river” Turnagain. The Fourth Earl of Sandwich later named the inlet Cook Inlet for his good friend, and in 1794 George Vancouver, exploring South Central Alaska, renamed the “river” Turnagain Arm. Sleeping lady provides a dramatic background for this painting of the HMS Resolution in the gray waters of  Cook Inlet.
